The Honorable Judge Michael Bolan
With a recent interview that I had with The Honorable Judge Michael Bolan, I was able to see what his thoughts were about the increase in crime rate in Chicago.
"over the past few years there has not only been an increase with the crime rate, but with the types of crimes that have been committed. As the gangs have increased in size and the number of police officers have declined, the more violent crimes I have seen in my courtroom are increasing day by day. What is going on is not healthy for the city of Chicago and there needs to be changes made before the violent crimes get too out of hand. I believe that if there were to be an increase in police officers, there would be greater authority out on the streets to produce a decrease in the crime rate. If changes are not made, Chicago could turn into a nightmare on the streets in certain areas."
"I have seen a fear in some citizens in Chicago as the crime rate has increased over the past few years. Certain people are afraid to go out at certain times in fear that they aren’t going to be safe on the streets in certain areas. Now how are the citizens of Chicago supposed to go about their everyday lives when they are afraid that some type of violent crime might come across them? It’s not any easy concept to handle, but the law enforcement needs to realize that the citizens need to be the number one priority along with their safety so correct action needs to take place."
The problem has not only been noticed by the police officers, Mayor Rahm Emmanuel, and Supt. McCarthy, but also the just one of the many judges that works in Chicago. Judges are able to see a direct increase in crime every single day when they go to work and they know that the crime situation is getting out of hand. With the lack of police officers, the courtroom will continue to see an increase of activity everyday when they go to work.
